It’s Promo Time Again!

It’s 7 minutes past midnight, so technically not September 15th anymore but it’s the weekend so I get a little slack, right?

First, there are two special things about this particular giveaway. 1. This giveaway is actually more of a trade. 2. Every month, I give away a piece of jewelry but I feel terrible about only being able to pick one person!

So this time around, I’m going to give the first 10 people who submit this silver, wire-wrapped, pale pink chunky rock ring.

All you have to do is take a photo of your favorite something pink. Even those of us who aren’t so crazy about the color has at least one favorite item.. anyway, take a photo and then send it to me. I’ll post the photos of the 10 winners and link them to your blog/website. Don’t forget to send me your ring size too! Here’s the email: prismeradesign [at] gmail.com

To kick off this giveaway, here is my photo to share. It is a photo of a scarf that I bought during my first trip to Nashville. When I wear it, it reminds me of convertible rides and antique malls.

Good luck everyone! I’ll post the winners on October 1st.

Tutorial: Curio/Jewelry Display

img_5100.jpg

It’s been a long time since my last photo tutorial, I know! Hopefully this one makes up for the wait. I’m going to be showing you one way to make a curio and/or jewelry display. It’s really simple and straightforward and is actually so gratifying, you’ll probably want to make a few with different fabrics.

To start, here are the things you’ll need.

img_5074.jpg

Materials:

  • shadowbox
  • fabric
  • foam core [any color is fine, black is just what I had at home]
  • jewelry pins [can be found at any jewelry supply store]
  • duct tape
  • craft fabric glue

Tools

  • ruler
  • cutting mat
  • scissors
  • knife

I’ve linked the items to places you can find some of the materials.

——————————-

Okay let’s begin!

img_5076.jpg

1. I’ve turned the shadowbox over and measured the space where I can place the final lined piece of foam.

img_5077.jpg

2. Taking those measurements, I cut a foam core [board] square. After cutting it out, don’t forget to place it into the shadowbox to be sure it won’t be too large when you are finished with it. I ended up cutting away half an inch from one side because I knew that after wrapping the fabric around it, it will be a slightly larger and I’ll have trouble fitting it into the shadowbox.

3. Now you’ve got a piece of foam core. Place it on top of the fabric and begin to cut a piece of fabric that is about 2 inches larger on all sides. A note on the fabric: I am using a heavy upholstery fabric, I find that it is easier to work with. The heavier the fabric, the easier to do this.

4. Position the board in the center of the piece of fabric and cut the corners off.

5. In order to begin stretching the fabric over the board, cut a few small pieces of duct tape. Start by folding one side and secure it with a piece of tape. Next, fold the opposite flap and secure. Do the same with the other flaps.

6. After taping the four sides, this is what the other side looks like. Wrinkly! Little by little, secure the edges of the flaps by taping one side and then stretching the opposite end and securing it with tape. So long as you always stretch the opposites first, the fabric will be pulled taut. [If this sounds familiar to art school students, it's the way to stretch canvases of course!]

Here’s the back after stretching it completely:

7. What a mess. Remedied easily enough:

8. After covering the back of the shadowbox with fabric glue, set the covered piece of foam into the shadowbox. When the glue is dried, add the pins and you’re done!

I think it’s a great way to display jewelry that you aren’t wearing at the moment– why let them just sit in a box? Also, because shadowboxes have glass or plastic covers, this also keeps the dust off the pieces.

Finally, here is a photo of the end product, how I’ve used it to display some of my things.

Have lots of fun! I’d love to see your final boxes too.

Thanks, Treehugger.com!

Such a pleasure to see my work on a site like treehugger.com!  Thank you so much.

(Btw, there is a special promotion that I am letting subscribers in on but I’ll let you in on it too: free necklace with every purchase on Prismera.com.  While you’re there, subscribe to the newsletter and you’ll always know when I have some nutty promotion.)

Also, for ladies that love to wear minimal, monochromatic outfits like I do most of the time, there will be a tiny collection meant for you– I am so excited to finish it.  Enormous and elaborate designs, vintage style chains, raw brass.  The name of the collection: Succulent, of course!  Don’t tell me you didn’t see that one coming..

Night Owl Paper Goods

Beautiful AND eco-friendly! I love these wood slices by Night Owl Paper Goods, such a special way to say hello to a friend.

Afterwards, they can be framed as tiny pieces of art to display, wherever you need a charming decorative touch.

Anne Sportun

While visiting Nashville last month, we wandered into a little shop and found a collection of exquisitely delicate pieces by Canadian jewelry designer Anne Sportun.  After my trip, I couldn’t shake the designs out of my head and found more of her work all over the web and now I’m sharing it with you.

My attraction to her pieces stems from the fact that I try to meld traditional and modern sensibilities in my own work and from the moment I set my eyes on her jewelry I could see that she was incredibly successful in doing just that.

Here are some of my favorites; they can be purchased through her website.
